Accuracy is key to reading with Accelerated Reader books. Research has shown that students who consistently score 90% or higher achieve greater reading growth than those who score below 85%. To encourage accuracy, the Library sponsors a weekly 100% raffle. When a student achieves 100% on either a reading practice or vocabulary practice quiz, he or she is given a raffle ticket to complete. We draw a weekly winner, who is awarded with a gift card to Borders Books.
The winner of the 100% raffle this week is Brandon Ann from Mrs. Matsunaga's 5th grade class. Congratulations, Brandon!

Summer reading has proven to be beneficial to a student's academic success. Equally important are the adventures your child will experience reading wonderful literature. Becoming involved in an enjoyable story is one of the most affordable summer trips your child can take. Click here to access Fairmont's Summer Reading Lists.
For those of you who can't make it to the school library this summer, we might have found the next best thing!
Check out www.bookadventure.com. This is a free site that has over 7,000 quizzes. Your student(s) will have an account and parent's can also have an account that will include access to their child(ern)'s results.
The quizzes are similar to Accelerated Reader quizzes in that they test for your student's comprehension. This is on the internet so quizzing can be done from anywhere!

Fairmont is pleased to offer 3 on-line databases from Britannica Online that students can use at home or at school. Encyclopedia Britannica is a powerful on-line encyclopedia that can be searched at three levels: Elementary School, Middle School and High School. This insures that students will understand the research material they've discovered, because it is age-appropriate. It also contains a dictionary, a thesaurus, on-line learning activities, as well as links to journals, magazines and appropriate websites.
For those who speak fluent Spanish, or students who want to work on their Spanish skills, we offer Britannica Spanish Reference Center. This includes both elementary and high school versions of encyclopedias and dictionaries in Spanish. It also offers Spanish-language educational videos.
Britannica Annals of American History offers more than 2,000 primary source documents and multimedia resources that guide students through the history of the United States. They can search using a timeline, and browse by author or topics in American History.
Just click on the link in the Sidebar to the right to get started.!

The Library was filled with fun and fiction as our youngest students and their parents enjoyed the gift of good company and good books. Preschool and Junior Kindergarten students could drop by and read with their parents anytime between 12:00 and 1:30 and 2:30 and 5:00. 30 families came by to share a special moment and it was heartening to see the smiles on the children's faces as they snuggled with their parents.
To view all the photos taken during the event visit the Stories & Snuggles Photo Gallery.

Beginning the week of December 8, 2008, Junior Kindergarten students will begin to check out books from the Library during their regularly scheduled Tuesday library class. Students have been given instruction on the care of library books, the proper way to select and return books to the shelves, and the organization of our Library.
Junior Kindergarten students will be allowed to check out 1 book per week from the Library. It will remain in their library folder in their desk. Students will not be taking books home so they can have access to their library book when the teacher deems it appropriate. We are very excited that our JK students have reached a level of maturity to handle this responsibility and are pleased to offer this new service to our budding readers.

Home Connect experienced a problem late Friday, May 30th. Renaissance Learning, the host of this website, installed an update to our software that was not anticipated to create a problem with Home Connect. Unfortunately, that was not the case. We reported the problem to the Renaissance Tech Support department and the problem was resolved mid-day on Monday, June 2nd. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Beginning November 1st, first grade students may check out two books at a time from the library. This is not a requirement, just an option. Some students may feel comfortable with working on one book at a time. Others will be at ease with two books. Your child and his or her teacher will be able to determine the proper volume of reading. Remember, the 1st grade teacher's reading requirement is 2-3 books a week. The goal is to foster a love of reading, and not provide any undue stress. Students will progress at their own rate, and experience the joy of good books along the way.
